He decided pens made from wood collected at the scout camp where the course will be held. After talking to the park ranger, they found some Bois D'Arc that had been cut and added to a brush pile. We were going to need 20-25 pens for the group.

We started the project with three 3.5" diameter logs 24-30" long. Our first order of business was to cut logs down to the proper size and allow them to dry. We cut the blanks using the band saw and a magnetic fence. The squared billets of bois d'arc were about 3/4"x3/4", we painted the ends with Anchor Seal and stacked them to dry in the shop.

While we waited for the billets to dry, we began trying to decide on the perfect pen kit for this project. We looked through Craft Supplies and Penn State Industries catalogs cover to cover. Pop had to make the final decision..... Cigar Pen in black titanium from Craft Supplies. He also ordered EEE polish and Shellawax to finish the pens.

Pop came down on Friday afternoon and we started working on the pens after the girls went to bed. That night we cut, drilled out and glued up enough blanks for 25 pens. The next morning we began turning pens. I had only turned one cigar pen prior to this weekend and royally fouled it up. The first few pens went slow as we tried to make sure we were getting everything right. Then we had to take a break from the shop to watch the Aggies beat baylor Whoop! That evening we started turning again and each pen offered a new surprise. As the pen count grew we began to notice that the pens went together much better if the blank was trimmed down very close to the brass tubes. By the end of the night we had close to 16 or 18 pens ( I lost count). Sunday Amy was on call and Pop, Charley, AnnMarie and I continued the pen making journey. We finished up around lunch. The EEE polish and Shellawax produces an impressive finish for how fast it can be applied.

After lunch Pop wanted to try his hand at the lathe on some key ring kits. The key rings will be given to a group of Venture Scouts that will be visiting the Woodbadge group during the week. It didn't take long and he was producing some very nice bois d'arc key chains in a variety of shapes and designs. I only got a picture on the first of the horse apple key chains, but the rest are equally impressive. I also think he might have gotten bitten by the woodturning bug. :)

I had a blast working on all these pens with Dad. That's what turning is all about, having fun.

Now for the Pictures!!
I am waiting on the delivery of some drawer pulls, then it will b e completely finished. However we moved it into the baby's room and replaced the old white crib.

Lessons learned from this project:
Don't buy big box store wood. It is warped.
Don't take the measurements in the plans as Gospel, make measurements from the actual projects when fitting things together. The cuts probably do not match exactly to what the plans state.
Be flexible and maintain the ability to redesign if something does not work out just right.
That being said, you also need to recognize when it would be better to start over.
Be wary of "stainable" wood filler. They lie.

Now time for some pictures.
This is the primary reason I have been neglecting the lathe and blog. Anyway the bed is made out of red oak and should be finished this coming weekend. Hopefully I can finish before the baby gets here. Ok now for the pics.
I finally got around to starting a new turning project. Over the winter I visited Wood World in Dallas, TX and found a piece of 12x12x3 cherry for $8. It had a crack in it, but for the price I decided I could work around that.

This project spanned several nights. I filled the outer crack with super glue and fine saw dust, the inner crack I tried filling it with blue inlay dust. However the blue material was too coarse to fill the crack fully. I sanded a good deal of it out and replaced it with saw dust. I sanded it to 400 grit and then finished it with 2 coats of danish oil. This is a thick walled bowl that feels good to hold and at the moment is doing a fine job holding oranges on the kitchen table.

Now time for the pictures.
My next turning project will be a shallow bowl from a piece of black mesquite I have sitting on the rack.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-27150885310628225422011-02-17T22:15:00.000-06:002011-02-17T22:15:32.349-06:00Shift knobTonight I turned a shifter knob for my truck. I turned it from a piece of persimmon branch that I picked up from the farm I grew up on. I chose persimmon because of is nice grain pattern and the light color. I am hoping that with a light oil finish the wood will develop a nice patina. It was a fairly simple project, so there might be more shifter knobs to come. I hope to have pictures soon.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-21805018207921119632011-02-08T20:20:00.000-06:002011-02-08T20:20:47.696-06:00Clean upToTonight I swept up all the shavings from the past few turning days and transfered them to the goat shed. I am making the plates from 2"x12" Swamp Ash blanks. Swamp Ash seems to be a fairly soft wood, requiring sharp tools and sanding sealer to prevent tear out. Fortunately, being a soft wood, it sands rather easily. After sanding to 240, I applied a coat of WATCO Danish Oil and applied steel wool while on the lathe. The fine steel wool seemed to polish the wood and oil, bringing out a better finish than just oil alone. Below is a picture of the prototype collection plate. I still have 3 more to make as similar to this one as I can.
Earlier this month I turned a hollow form from cedar. The shape was inspired by southwestern pottery. As I progress the opening at the top should continue to shrink. The finish on the pot is shellac.
Last Friday night I turned a small candy dish from a piece of Argentinian Lignum Vitae. I really like working with this wood. It gives off a pleasant citrus aroma when it is cut. As dense and oily as the wood naturally is, it polishes up quite nicely. I finished this bowl with WATCO Teak Oil.
Needless to say it still needs about a days worth of spring cleaning.

I cut 4- 12"x12"x2" blanks from some Swamp Ash this evening. They will be turned into collection plates that will be used in a new service at our church. The new service debuts on the 30th, 12 days to design, turn, and finish 4 collection plates. I should be able to finish on time. We shall see.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-11346955366641583712010-12-29T19:12:00.000-06:002010-12-29T19:12:46.700-06:00Mini Maple BatI made this 12" long for my year old nephew. I wonder how long it will take him to figure out how to whack the dogs and furniture and walls with it....
I made four sets of salt and pepper mills from cocobolo, katalox, guapanillo, and bocote. Plus one extra pepper mill from bloodwood. I had planned on five sets, but stuck the bit in the Indian Rosewood. Forgive me for the lack of pics, I did not want to spoil the gifts and was not finished with them until about one hour before I needed to leave for Dallas.

Lessons learned from this project include chucking, drilling and finishing. With this project I learned very quickly how valuable multiple chucks and multiple jaws for those chucks can be. I used the #2 jaws on my Oneway Stronghold and the long nose pin jaws on my SuperNova2. I also try to minimize the amount of rechucking that I do. As far as drilling goes, I believe that a pilot hole drilled on the lathe then finished out on the drill press. I feel like the drilling is easier and results are more accurate. And yes you can really can drill a bit stuck... so stuck that you have to turn the waste wood away to recover it. I also discovered that oil finishes do not dry in a cold shop with dense woods. The finished stayed very sticky using Danish oil. Then I tried Teak oil, still sticky, Tung oil and was still sticky. I cleaned all the previous finishes with mineral spirits and alcohol. Polyurethane would not even work. Finally I used some blonde shellac to get a clean glossy finish.

I have been working on cleaning up the shop lately, with the help of my father-in-law. We got a fair bit accomplished today.

To relax this evening I turned a 12" maple baseball bat for my 13 month old nephew. I wonder how long it will take for him to learn how to whop the dog with it.... Pictures to come.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-3595632484996615022010-12-04T22:30:00.000-06:002010-12-04T22:30:40.159-06:00Christmas is coming.... 21 days left.I have been busy working on Christmas gifts and other related projects. This weekend I finished a bowl/platter made of another unknown bargain bin wood, three votive candle holders, and several more tree ornaments.

This bowl/platter is another one of my bargain bin mystery woods from Woodcraft in OKC. It is a fairly hard wood that turned well. I sanded it up to 400 grit, then finished it with Watco Danish Oil. I still have a few more coats of oil and some buffing to finish it up. It is by far the best feeling and looking creation to date, in my opinion.
The first two candle holders are made from a persimmon branch and are shaped like small goblets. The persimmon wood has some unique coloring and black spots. The third candle holder is made from Arizona Cypress. It is reversible and can hold a candle on either end. All have been finished with danish oil.
The Christmas Tree ornaments are made from ebony, mesquite, zebra wood, and a mystery wood. These have been finished with polyurethane gloss. There are four more ornaments still in the shop allowing the polyurethane to dry overnight.
I will be in OKC Sunday through Tuesday and plan on making at least one run by Woodcraft. I am going to get a SuperNova2 chuck to hold some of the larger heavier bowls and well as long, heavy spindles. I will also look in their bargain bin for some more good deals.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-15141300505011915982010-11-26T13:20:00.000-06:002010-11-26T13:20:40.701-06:00Saved from the Burn PileI haven't had much time to turn this month. The following pictures are two goblets turned from some river birch. It turned fairly easily. I need some more work on the base of the goblets.
This is the wood I salvaged from some burn piles in New Mexico. It is cottonwood and Arizona Cypress. My truck and trailer was loaded down with wood on the trip back. The last picture is of a log I split in half. I am considering cutting a slab from it and making a small bench or stool. I can always cut quite a few bowl blanks and spindle billets from it.
I will have some more ornaments ready soon. Along with a few pens.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-10329237623268918402010-11-01T21:10:00.000-05:002010-11-01T21:28:19.943-05:00Cedar Bowl IIThis is a cedar hollow form/bowl. It is finished with amber shellac. I turned it using a set of carbide hollowing tools. These tools produced a smooth surface that required less sanding than usual. The hollow interior follows the contour, with a wall thickness of about 1/4". All in all I am pleased with the turning, but not so sure about the shellac. Maybe I just need more practice.

I also wrote an article about this blog that was published in the ETWA Newsletter this month. A link to the ETWA website is posted under the links section to the right. You can navigate to this months newsletter to view the article.
Now for the pictures.
I have been preparing for the New Mexico Mule Deer season that begins in just over one week. I have also been working to get the shop annex finished. I have however been able to complete several turning projects including an 14" peppermill, a bicentered hollow form, two bowls and a birch hollow form that exploded.

The peppermill was turned from a piece of wood from the bargain bin at Woodcraft. It is slightly off center but is better than the previous peppermill. I will attempt to use the spindle steady and possibly a new drilling technique. My next peppermill will be from bloodwood or another bargain bin wood (possibly canary wood). Hopefully my next attempt will not have these same issues.

The bicentered hollow form originally was to be a single axis vessel from some persimmon. However turning revealed a natural hollow section. I rechucked the project with a 1 1/8" expanding collet chuck. The result is a rather interesting piece.
The first bowl is from another piece of bargain bin wood. If anyone has any insight as to the type of wood this is please let me know. The walls of the bowl curve in and the interior of the bowl follows this contour. My wife like this bow so much she confiscated it for use as her new ring/necklace/earring holder on our vanity.
The second bowl is from curly maple that I acquired from the bargain rack at Wood World in Dallas. This bowl has a rounded base, but is weighted so that it stays upright. This shape would make a good candy dish somewhere.
My attempt at a hollow vase was going quite well until I tried to turn off the tennon. I took a catch and knocked the vase off the chuck where it proceeded to be destroyed. Upon further examination of the broken vessel, I am pleased with the uniformity of the wall thickness. This was turned from a piece of river birch that was given to be by Tom C. at our last ETWA meeting.
From ebony, mahogany, and some zebra wood. I don't have any pictures of them at the moment but will post some sooner or later.
I ordered some wood and parts for Christmas presents, attended the East Texas Woodturner's Association meeting, visited the Hardwood Barn in Mt. Enterprise, TX, sawed up some logs into blanks, started a unique project involving paper and wood glue, and turned some goblets and tops.

The parts and wood for the gifts should arrive tomorrow. I turned a part for one of the gifts, but was unhappy with the shape. However I did learn some valuable lessons. You will just have to wait until after Christmas to see the pictures.

The ETWA meeting was quite eventful. The demo illustrated the art of segmented turning. I have along way to go before I attempt any segmented work. Also at the meeting there was some freshly cut River Birch free for the taking, provided by a generous member of the group.

At the Hardwood Barn I found some nice Mahogany, Zebrawood, Ebony, Bocote, and some assorted pen blanks. The Hardwood Barn had a nice selection of exotic and domestic lumber with quite reasonable prices, combined with friendly service, I will be a return customer.

I sawed up some Red Oak and Persimmon into some blanks and billets. There was some very interesting grain in some of the oak, as it is somewhat spalted. We will see what becomes of this in the future.

Now for some pictures.

First I turned a goblet from some spalted, rotten, worm eaten Red Oak. The lesson learned from this project is don't get greedy. I was almost finished and decided I should take one more cut.... and took a catch and snapped the stem. The next day I came back and turned the lower portion of the goblet away and the glued it back to the upper portion. Overall I am pleased with the results.

The next goblet I turned is from a piece of Persimmon. It was green and turned very well. I am unhappy with the thickness of the goblet. I did not stop to check the thickness before I turned the stem and could not correct the problem. However I do like the look of the bark on the edges.
The two tops I turned tonight are from wood that was found in the bargain bin at Woodcraft in OKC. I am finding that I really enjoy turning tops. They make good gifts, use small amounts of wood, and don't take too long to make. Is there anyone that doesn't enjoy spinning a top?

The softball bat is made from a piece of red oak salvaged from a shipping crate. The shape was free handed. I started off just roughing the oak into a long cylinder then decided half way through that I should try to make a bat. As completely freehand off the cuff project, I am quite pleased with the results. My daughter likes it as well, although she uses it more like a golf club, swatting wiffle golf balls around the house, then chasing them down and whacking them again.

The next project is a small top made from teak. I am much more pleased with the shape of this top than my previous attempts. On the top surface I used the Sorby texture tool. It produced an interesting spiral type pattern, though it is hard to see in the picture. It spins well.
The first bowl is made from red oak that had to be removed from the front yard of my parents house. This bowl was turned green and has warped slightly. The oak has a good grain.
The second bowl I turned is from black limba. This seemed to be a softer wood that was prone to end grain tear out. A considerable amount of sanding was required to smooth everything out. Apparently black limba normally has more of the dark streaks that you see at edge of the bowl.
Everything was finished with Watco Danish oil. I will be applying tung oil to increase the sheen on the black limba bowl.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-68832369232366997752010-09-28T21:52:00.000-05:002010-09-28T21:52:24.935-05:00Peppermill, Spinning Top and KeychainOver the past few days I have completed a few more projects. I made a peppermill out of paduak, a spinning top out of an unknown bargain bin wood that has a reddish color, and a key chain from lignum vitae.

The peppermill was not as difficult as I thought it would be. Originally I had intended the shape to be a much more gentle taper to a narrow point about 2/3 from the base and then taper back out to the top. The gouge took a bad catch and forced me to remove more wood near the base than I had originally intended. I will have to be more careful next time. I also managed to turn it slightly out of round. It is hard to see but easy to feel when you twist the cap. Overall I am pleased with my first attempt, but definitely have some work to do. I finished it with one coat of danish oil and one coat of tung oil.
The spinning top is made of a wood that I got from Woodcraft's bargain bin. It has a nice color but apparently is rather green. As the top has developed splits. I finished it with two coats of danish oil. I may need to look into another finish to help slow the moisture loss and reduce some of the splitting. On the bright side it spins really well.
Last but not least, the key chain. I needed a new key chain for the Kubota RTV and decided a small piece of lignum vitae would be a good candidate. I really liked working with this wood. The density and hardness forces you to take your time and make good cuts. It also finishes well, it polished up well with out any oil. Although I did apply one coat of danish oil just for a little added protection.
Finally I took some pictures to upload.

A top I made tonight. Black walnut and a hard wood dowel. I wish I had made the stem a bit slimmer. Maybe next time.

Tonight I also made a pen out of holly. I turned captured ring on this one. While sanding the main barrel of the pen I bumped the ring a bit to hard and caused it to split. A little CA glue fixed it up. I will have to be more careful next time.
Here is a picture of an egg shaped kaleidoscope made of purple heart. I am fairly pleased with the way this turned out. I wish I had put more of the jewel/colors on the inside. I put about half of what came with the kit. I think 3/4 would make it more fun.

This is a small black walnut bowl. I it only has one coat of oil on it, thus the lack of sheen. I wanted this to be more of a utilitarian bowl and like the feel of the wood. Lots of oil or poly makes it feel more like plastic to me.

This is a bracelet I made of purple heart. It is finished with gloss polyurethane. Hopefully the poly finish will hold up to some light wear and tear.
Last but not least is the finished cedar bowl. It turned out rather nicely. It has about 10 coats of high gloss tung oil and then buffed to a finish. There are two cracks that were repaired with CA glue. The grain looks really nice with the oiled finish. There are some places that it gets curly and swirly. The last photo should give some idea of the size of the bowl. I will make more notes on this bowl at a later date.

Well now you are caught up on my most recent turnings. There are a several other bowls and pens have been given away.

An update on the shop... then Annex interior should be walled off and window installed.

Hopefully I will stay more current with pictures.
This wood was found/cut during the first part of June of this year near Lake Texoma.

The cedar was fairly easy wood to rough turn. After I obtained an acceptable shape, I applied a coat of sanding sealer to help stiffen up the end grain. Once the sanding sealer dried, I was able to make a finish cut and then sanded it up to 240 and polished up with fine steel wool. I applied Watco Danish oil as a finish and was impressed at the speed the cedar absorbed the oil.

I will apply a few more coats of oil and then finish out the interior.

While hollowing out the interior the tenon failed and the bowl flew off the lathe. I had to remount the bowl to the faceplate and reshape the exterior and cut a new tenon that was a bit stronger than the last. Needless to say the original shape changed a bit. I also decided to go with a tung oil finish instead of the danish oil. I think it turned out all right for having bounced all over the shop.

Still need to get some pictures up.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-43397603022945835792010-09-12T08:40:00.000-05:002010-09-12T08:40:29.690-05:00Week 1This past week provided several learning experiences. My first project was a small bowl from black walnut. The second project involved sawing up some red oak logs and then roughing out some bowls.

While turning the small walnut bowl, I could not achieve a smooth transition from the side wall to the bottom of the interior of the bowl. After doing some research I discovered that I was using a gouge with too shallow of a bevel. A steeper bevel would have allowed me to work through the tight curve. Also on this bowl, I used a power sander for the first time, it provided a considerably better finish much faster than hand sanding.

While sawing up the red oak my Poulan 16" chainsaw bit the dust. It could not handle the 16-18" diameter logs. I made a quick run to the local Stihl dealer and purchased a MS-290 20" saw. The Stihl made quick work of the logs, it is a much higher quality machine.

I mounted on of the half logs to a face plate and proceeded to rough out the bowl. Instead of hollowing out the interior with a gouge, I wanted to create a set of three nesting bowls using a Stewart System Straight Slicing Tool. Leaving the bowl on the face plate I proceeded to turn off the outer bowl. I found that it is critical to turn the relief cuts first, then make the final straight cut. The tool took a few bad catches, but I finally got the bowl off. While turning the second bowl off, I was close to the the end of the cut, when I took a catch and sent half of the bowl flying across the shop. When using a straight slicer, give yourself plenty of room from the start with good relief cuts.

I will try to figure out how to post pictures later this week.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7473119094895086662.post-71036497495945575322010-09-04T21:32:00.000-05:002010-09-04T21:32:27.548-05:00The missionMy goal is to create a weekly record of projects, notes, and lessons learned as I learn to turn wood.

Background-
I was given a wonderful gift a few months ago, a nearly complete shop of woodworking tools. My wife's grandfather gave these tools to me, and as a result I have spent a great deal of time in the shop learning how to use them.

I have become hooked on lathe work and have made several pens, a few useless spindles, a bracelet, some toys for my daughter, and a few attempts at bowls.

The plan is to update the blog every Sunday or more often if necessary. Sunday, being the first day of the week will allow me to review the previous week's work and provide a preview for the upcoming week.wbhintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589679062991034293noreply@blogger.com0
